The following formula can be used to calculate the theoretical spreading rate of a powder coating in m²/kg:
Coated thickness in microns (µm) multiplied by product's density (specific gravity) = needed powder quantity in g/m².
Example: To calculate the theoretical spreading rate of a powder coating with the density of 1.65 and an application thickness of 80µm:
80 x 1,65 = 132 g/m²
To convert to m²/kg: 1,000 : 132 = 7.75 m²/kg (which is the theoretical spreading rate).
Please note that this calculation is just theoretical as it assumes a constant thickness, with 0% powder loss in the equipment and spray booth, which is in fact not possible in industrial application.
