application of powder coatings

There are two main application methods:

ELECTROSTATIC APPLICATION (CORONA)

Electrostatic spraying, which is the most common application method, makes use of the electric charge of powder particles.

• High voltage is applied to a spray gun’s electrodes.
• The circulating air is ionised.
• When the powder particles go through the ‘ion cloud’, they partially adhere to the ions and then they get charged.

ELECTROKINETIC APPLICATION (TRIBO)

This technique uses friction charging instead of high voltage generator.

• The powder is propelled through a Teflon tube.
• Due to the force of friction and the difference in resistance between the Teflon and the particles of powder, the latter get charged and are attracted to the substrate.
